VL: Audience

My target audience are Mexican Americans that are from second or third generation. They are also educated and are between the age of 20-45.

SHARED VALUES
My target audience's values are a strong family structure, traditions, certain ceremonies, traditional holidays, religion beliefs, certain foods, and of course language.

Around the 1980's there were over 100 Spanish-language newspapers, 500 radio stations, and around 130 television stations who were partially or completely in Spanish.

For the Religion beliefs about 80% are Catholic.

POLITICAL ISSUES
Education is extremely important to my target audience. The research I found actually states that 56% of hispanics believe that education is the most important issue. The next is 50% think that health care is important. Economy and jobs are at 45%. Crime is at 41% and immigration and war in Iraq are at 37%.

Mexican Americans show that there are about one third have diabetes. 23.9% that had diabetes were between the age of 45-74. Alcoholism affects Mexican Americans up to 8 to 12 percent higher than non-Hispanic whites. This mainly occurs in families of low economic stability. The cirrhosis of the liver is the common cause of death for these individuals. The percentage is 40% higher among Mexican Americans than Anglo Americans.

Around 70% of Mexican Americans are registered or registering as Independent or Democratic. There are five key states that are focused on Mexican American votes. Those states are California, New York, Florida, Texas and Illinois. Together they comprise over half of the electoral vote. Mexican Americans are influenced with ending discrimination against Hispanics and to encourage education and political participation. During Bobby Kennedy's presidential campaign they targeted Mexican Americans and by this he gained 95% of their votes.

CULTURAL REFERENCES
They identify with vivid, rich colors, through their art and clothing. They watch both mainstream and hispanic specific channels. They have a very tight close family and values.

VISUAL AUDIT

WHY THEY ARE NOT VOTING
A big reason why they are not voting is because of lower citizenship rates. About 25% are not able to vote because they are not U.S. citizens. They also have less voter participation and a very youthful demographic. More than 44 million are hispanic and about a third are too young to vote. The Mexican Americans that are older do not vote because of mistrust in the government that is passed down from their parents or grandparents.

For hundred of years Mexican Americans have stood campaigning for their voting, education, and employment discrimination rights, but they have also struggled trying to maintain their identity and community which is greatly valued because of discrimination.

In 1848 Mexican Americans in certain states were suppose to get voting rights but they had to have proper requirements in order to vote. They used property and literacy requirements in order for them not to vote if that didn't work they then used violence and intimidation. In 1921 Sons of America organized to fight for equality and the right to vote for all. It wasn't until 1975 when all Mexican Americans were allowed to vote. In 1954 Hernandez vs. Texas appeared in the Supreme Court to declare that Mexican Americans and also other racial groups in the United States were entitled to equal rights under the protection of the 14th Amendment. 1980 when language assistance was offered to those who were not fluent in English.

MX Project 1: solutions

For my first solution I wanted this to be a quick read of articles and videos of topics that my audience would be interested in. At the top there are quick links that are descriptive words that relate to my audience. If they decide to click on one of the words it would take them to cnn.com and have a list of articles, videos, and blogs that contain to that search. I only allowed a small portion of the articles, because I wanted the viewer to decide if they want to read more or pass it by.

For my second solution I wanted this newsletter to be very simple and structured, also a quick read. The newsletter is not that long in height because I wanted the single parent to have almost all of the main articles there in front of them without having to scroll down so much. The single parent has little time and needs to be able to read this without a lot of cluster. This newsletter only allows for a few articles and videos that interests the single parent.

For my last solution I went with a horizontal layout. I wanted this newsletter to be a bit more personal. There is a section where the user can have videos, blogs, or local news that fits to their interests. I also wanted this to be a quick read but also having more information on this newsletter hoping that the user has a little more time to read the articles and search cnn.com.
